A local health and social care service has commissioned you to write a report. The aim of the report is to raise the awareness of health and social care professionals working in the service of the source of potential public misunderstandings of health and social care information. The commissioners of your report are particularly interested in understanding how tabloid newspapers such as the Sun Mirror Daily Mail and Daily Star report on health information and how this kind of information is disseminated in comparison to other information sources.

The Impact of the internet: On news media politics and professional practices eg news as a commodity the dominance of small number of primary news sources lack of critical scrutiny dumbing down of the news.

Recent media research (SWINE FLU) you have conducted has highlighted that a recent health and social care issue was the subject of much negative press and is causing a major moral panic. Some local health and social care services have informed you that they are struggling to cope with the commotion that the press has generated when carrying out their day to day services.
You have been tasked with producing a staff report that explains to health and social care professionals what a moral panic is and demonstrate how the press has manipulated information to cause such a public reaction.

The situation remains contained for moment but the health and social care service fear what will happen next and want to understand the full extent of the press coverage may have on their service.
