Themes of Disillusionment and Isolation in “All Quiet on the Western Front”
Discuss the theme of disillusionment and isolation in chapter seven of Erich Maria Remarque’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” – when Paul returns home on leave. Describe how Paul’s time spent alone in public observing and talking to people makes him realize that his thoughts and the things he witnessed in combat will never be truly understood and only glamorized by those around him, due to nationalism. Paul’s sense of isolation grows more apparent as he learns of his mother’s illness, and this only makes him want to spend less time at home. (I understand that this is a novel – I will send a document with pictures of each of the pages necessary for writing about the subject.)
